Numerous streams flow through Danzao, a part of the Pearl River water system, which flows southward in the flat land of Danzao and injects into the sea.

Therefore, Danzao possesses beautiful scenery and gives rise to the diversity of plant and animal ecology. Since ancient times, the Pearl River Delta, where Danzao is located, has been closely connected with the world as an important port on the ‘Maritime Silk Road’. Open-mindedness is the essence of Cantonese culture and the engine of its economic and cultural prosperity. This exhibition seeks to explore the dynamic interplay between international contemporary art and local traditions and innovative industries in the vibrant community of Luohang Hill, Danzao.

The exhibition takes place in the old building ‘Canton Teahouse’. In this unique setting, we are honoured to present the work of two outstanding artists, Ilan Garibi and David Gerstein. Garibi’s contemporary origami works challenge our perceptions of form and material, while Gerstein's colorful multi-media works invite us to reflect on the harmony between nature and human creativity. At the same time, Galibi's ‘purposeless’ creative expression and dedication to exquisite craftsmanship, and Grossetan’s ‘purposefulness’ in creating art that is popular among the general public, are extremely inspiring for the development of both traditional and innovative industries.

We are also very honoured to have Chinese contemporary artist Xiangyang in the exhibition, which makes it a true platform for international exchange. ‘Every river seems to come with a purpose. *’ Xiangyang shares the same purpose as the rivers of Danzao: to run to the sea. Xiangyang initiated the Global Art Voyage Project to create sea boats from parts of antique Chinese furniture and old buildings. He plans to sail from Danzao to the mouth of the Pearl River, exchanging culture and art with countries around the world along the way. The ‘Stool Project’ shown in the exhibition is a preliminary work of the project.

Alongside the artworks and designs, there will be a series of installations co-created with curators, artists and local industry (bamboo weavers Gao Qinkai, Gao Yuekai and Technical support for 3D printing from Guangdong Fenghua Zhuo Li Technology Co.). We invite you to explore the intersection of art and manufacturing, to reflect on the stories behind each piece, and to engage in a dialogue critical to the preservation and transformation of tradition. It is hoped that by encouraging this dialogue, a spirit of openness and collaboration will be established, inviting local industry to be exposed to more and more leading international art and design.

Hechung*: Cantonese word meaning small river, tributary.
‘Every river seems to come with a purpose.’ *: quoted from the Japanese novelist Murakami Haruki’s Kafka On the Shore.
