Shanglou · Less Than One Square

This exhibition presents the site-specific practices of five artists, most of whom work in the former “Kaohua Building” of the Jingdezhen Sculpture Factory—today known as Shanglou. The show focuses on the micro-scale of creation and the gaps within lived space, unfolding through installations, ceramics, paintings, and other forms, and invites audiences to step into the artistic ecology of Jingdezhen.

Shanglou is not only a building but also a way of life. Within it, work and daily living are never clearly separated. Those who gather here are companions as much as colleagues—they make art, but also dig bamboo shoots, catch fish, wander through bamboo groves, play with cats and dogs, or share gossip together. They shape clay with the same intensity that they shape their everyday lives.

“Less Than One Square” does not refer to a literal square meter, but to every small yet real creative unit: a conversation, a tabletop, an experimental fragment, a lump of clay in use. It marks the smallest point of contact between artists and the world, while also redefining density, locality, and collaboration. Each work in this exhibition grows naturally out of the shared life at Shanglou—personal ideas and collective rhythms intertwining, where creation, collaboration, discussion, and living merge into one.

「上楼·小于一平方 Shanglou·Less than One Square」，展览呈现五位艺术家的在地创作与微观实践。他们大多来自雕塑瓷厂“彩绘楼/烤花楼”——如今被称作「上楼」的工作室群。展览聚焦于创作的微尺度与现实空间的缝隙，以装置、陶瓷、绘画等多重形式展开，邀请观众走入景德镇雕塑瓷厂的艺术生态。

上楼，是一栋楼，也是一种生活方式。在这栋楼里，工作与生活从不被清晰区分。聚集在这儿的人，也是一起工作、一起过日子的一群人。他们不仅做作品，也一起挖笋、捞鱼、逛竹林，撩猫逗狗、聚众吃瓜。他们努力捏泥，也努力生活。

「上楼·小于一平方」，一平方指的并不是真正的一平方米，而是每个微小但真实的创作单位：一段对话、一张桌面、一件试验品、一片被使用的泥料……它是艺术家与世界互动的最小节点，也是一种对密度、对在地、对协作关系的重新定义。每一件被呈现的作品，都是上楼艺术家们在共同体生活中自然生长出的片段与回应，个人的想法和群体的节奏彼此交织，创作、协作、讨论与生活浑然一体。
