Born in Israel in 1971, Shai Azoulay received both his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design Jerusalem. He also undertook undergraduate art history at the Hebrew University.
Shai Azoulay has chosen to live and work in Jerusalem, at a conscious remove from the commercial art world of Tel Aviv. It is in Jerusalem that he finds a unique energy, born of both social and political tensions as well as cultural vibrancy, that sustains his creative inner life.
Azoulay is a colorist and storyteller by adding figures and scenes in his painting. However, his work is not a representation of reality. He combines autobiography and abundant imagination to give his pieces a surreal quality. Besides, he also returns to Great masters in the Western art history, such as Malevich, Matisse, Beuys, Richter etc. Shai Azoulay’s work outstandingly ranges between drawing to painting, between the sophisticated to the naïve and between the fluent to the inarticulate.
Shai Azoulay’s paintings can be categorized into three main series: “Studio Tales”, “Outdoor” and “Cut-outs”. The three series are bonded in a circle which forms the themes of his work in the last ten years. “Cut-outs” is an extension of “Studio Tales” with more vibrant colors and more abstract style.
As one of the most outstanding young artists in Israel, Shai Azoulay has drawn more and more attention in the contemporary art world in New York, London and other parts of the world. In 2011, he had his first exhibition in Tel Aviv Art Museum in Israel. He has had solo show in galleries in London, New York, Tokyo, Vienna, Chicago, Cleveland etc. His work has also been shown at art fairs in London, Miami and Amsterdam etc.
